What are the Rewards of being a Photographer?

What are the rewards of being a photographer? Isn't it chaotic trying to coordinate schedules and people? What do you do when the kids are uncooperative because standing still and posing is unnatural for most children? What if you're on location and it rains?

Yes, the life of a photographer can be hectic at times, but the rewards far outweigh anything else. I get to go on location for shoots. I get to meet new people and form new friendships. I help people love photos of themselves. When I hand a client their photographs and they are moved to tears, that is the reward that makes everything worthwhile. Providing a service to clients in such a way as to provoke an emotional response is the best reward because I know I did my job well. Everyone should feel that powerful emotion when they see themselves through the eyes of others.

Why do I love this genre of photography so much?

How many of us think that we cannot get a portrait of ourselves because we have an extra few pounds, flabby arms, a bad haircut, etc? My job is to minimize these "flaws" and make you look amazing in your portrait.

There is nothing like seeing a person look at their photos and the look of awe as though that person is thinking "is this really me?" That is the service I provide to my clients.

Portraits are about the client. With that in mind, we can style a shoot to fit your personality.

50 years of marriage

This weekend I had the honor of photographing a couple who was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.  Watching them together was an incredible experience.  The bride opted to buy a new dress so we were able to get first look photos.  Imagine after 50 years getting to his bride for the first time all over again.  The way the two of them still look at each other is heartwarming!

#exist in photos

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I mark each portrait with the hashtag "exist in photos."  This is a hashtag that I find particularly meaningful and it serves as a good reminder.  The most important part of photography to me is capturing memories for families to hold onto for generations.  Too often, people look back through photos and realize that a beloved family member was either behind the camera, or too shy or ashamed to be photographed.  Do not be afraid to be in front of the camera!  No matter what flaws you think you have, your family wants to see you in photos.  I love taking photos that show you how beautiful you really are, photos that you and your family can cherish for years to come.  So, exist with your family, exist in love, and exist in photos.

These two were so happy to get a beautiful couples photo, and their children will want to hold onto this.  

Children in their Element

More often than not, we want to get photographs of our children when their clothes and hair are perfect.  Realistically, how often does that happen?  I was lucky enough to shoot these sweeties doing what they do.  They were playing, rolling around in the grass, and eating snacks.  This is how children are.  So no, they are not perfectly clean, but the pictures are genuine. 

Vacation

We went on a much needed vacation last week to Iowa.  Seeing his family is so relaxing and rejuvenating.  I love the area and the family.  His brother and sister in law took us into their home for the entire nine days we stayed.  We were so grateful. 
They wanted updated family portraits and I was happy to oblige! 

All the Small Things

So as you all know by now, photography is my passion.  With that comes Photoshop which is the bane of my existence.  😵  Well, that may be drastic, but it is a HUGE program with so much to learn!!  I have been taking as many online classes as possible to learn how to work the program.  Anyway, I had a vision for this portrait and I was successfully able to achieve the look I wanted!!!!  Victory was mine!!!!!

Impromptu Photoshoot

So over the weekend we had planned to shoot my other half's daughter with her significant other. They had coordinating outfits and wanted to look nice for the shoot.
 We also wanted to go to the Edmonds Art Festival.  We did that first and had a great time.  We saw so many art projects from school age children that was simply stunning and incredible.  They poured all their energy into their art work and it clearly showed.
As the day progressed, it kept getting warmer.  We were there for several hours and by the time we were done, everyone was hot and tired.
However, our photo subjects were game to try to do photos anyway.  So after walking all day in the hot sun, we shot and came up with these super cute photos!!
Loved the enthusiasm and energy of these two!!

First Newborn Shoot

I am so excited yet so nervous!!  Today I shoot my first ever newborn for a baby that is not a grandchild.
I have been having a blast taking pictures of couples and families with older kids.  This is a first that I I feel honored to do.  The ideas for a newborn are endless and I know babies are unpredictable so this should be a fun new experience.
